Some notes about the Valles Caldera National Park Preserve:

The Valles Caldera, also known as the Jemez Caldera, is a massive volcanic caldera located in the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico. Spanning 13.7 miles (22.0 km) in diameter, the caldera features a variety of geothermal features, including hot springs, fumaroles, natural gas seeps, streams, and volcanic domes. The highest point in the caldera is Redondo Peak, a resurgent lava dome that rises to 11,254 feet (3,430 meters). This peak is surrounded by a moat of solidified rhyolitic lava flows. Several grass-covered valleys, or "valles," lie within the caldera, with Valle Grande being the largest and the only one accessible by a paved road. In 1975, the Valles Caldera was designated a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service. Much of the caldera is now part of the Valles Caldera National Preserve, a unit of the National Park System. The area holds significant cultural, economic, and scientific importance and is known for its complex geological history.
